Shouldn’t Hike and Bike Trails Be… Hike and Bike Safe?

After weeks of meaning to, I finally went for a bike ride on the Shoal Creek Hike and Bike Trail. It’s an easy to miss entrance when you’re coming from the north, just a dark wooded path next to the sidewalk down Lamar. And the first quarter mile is downhill…. with a sharp drop-off… and a rock overhang at approximately head level. So of course I hit my head.

You’d think they’d put some sort of warning sign up that maybe you’d like to walk your bike for this first little bit (which I ended up doing) or put a fence up on the cliff side or smooth out the ride so you don’t hit a rock and bringing your head even closer to the perilous rock. Nope.

On the other hand though, it’s totally worth it. You feel away from the heart of the city. Everything right now is green and lush. And unlike the hike and bike trails around Town Lake, this area is fairly uncrowded and involves a lot less yelling “On your left!” and maneuvering around strollers.
