I know I haven’t posted in a very long time. It was partly because I felt like I didn’t have anything to say or share (and partly because when I am sharing it is with very few people), partly because I’ve been without regular internet access and my computer really wanted to be the bane of my existence.
But something incredibly tragic and important is happening in Texas right now, right outside of Austin.
When I first moved to Australia, in the first month I lived there, one of the worst fires in Victorian (and maybe even Australian) history occurred: Black Saturday. It was 116F, the wind was incredible and the drought was still on going. Multiple fires started and over 2,000 houses were destroyed. During the time of that fire 170 people died. The city of Melbourne was thick with smoke and its citizens were frantic with concern. The wonderful part that I witnessed; however, was the overwhelming outpouring of concern, love and donations. Over $372 million was raised in response to the bush fires.
This week in Central Texas, not that far away from Austin, 170 wildfires have been ravaging the state. Over 1400 homes have been destroyed.
The worst of which is in Bastrop, Texas not far outside Austin. This picture is a view nearby shot by a resident there.
If you can donate, please do. There are a lot of people here in Texas whose whole lives have been changed forever, people who have lost everything. Your neighbors need your support.
