I am never as cultured as I’d like to be. You may remember that problem I have where I watch Vampire Diaries instead of documentaries. I often see the same bands play instead of seeking out new music. There isn’t nearly enough time or money in the world to see all the films I’m interested in catching and I haven’t seen a dance or theatrical performance in ages. Totally pathetic. Totally uncultured.

But this weekend I proved my worth. It all started with an invite to an event at the Blanton Museum. Apparently every month (don’t quote me on that) they have an event called the B Scene which is a themed party with bands, activities, a cash bar, etc. This Friday was a Great Gatsby themed party. We looked adorable in our Gatsby gear and loved listening to White Ghost Shivers. What a perfect band for this event. Check them out below.
But it gets even better. I got clued into the Write Bloody opening via a site I’d never run into before: CultureMap Austin. It’s a great site full of the goings-ons here in town. Write Bloody is a poetry bookstore. It also has a press that publishes books of poetry. Derrick Brown says, “We at Write Bloody are striving to make poetry less dorky and as approachable as going to a rock and roll show.” And guess what- it’s a success. I checked out the daytime opening events featuring a taco eating contest (food provided by Juan in a Million), free beer and very friendly poets as well as the nighttime performances at ND. My anti-poetry boyfriend felt bad that was going along and came with me. He didn’t even hate it. At times he enjoyed himself. Multiple times he laughed out loud. I’m not saying he’d go again but it says a lot for the success of Write Bloody’s mission.
Poetry is not something I’m automatically drawn to. I have a deep appreciation for poetry but I have a hard time sitting down and reading it. I love to read it out loud and have it read to me. The performances were wonderful and the courage of those who read their very personal and fantastic works is so incredible. While I’m not running out to buy a book of poetry at the moment, I do hope I find a way to support the store as it’s a rare gem to see a bookstore opening up in today’s economic, anti-physical books (pro-Kindle) environment. Congratulations Write Bloody. The store’s fantastic.
And I, for one, am feeling very culture just for visiting.
