Austin Map Jam

Yesterday was undeniably gorgeous. And I had absolutely nothing that I had to do. Don’t you just love days like that? I woke up a little hungover so I didn’t start my day as gungho as I might have hoped but with some eggs and bacon, Earl Grey tea and a little couch time watching Mona Lisa Smile (this is your opportunity to mock me as it gets worse: I was knitting while I watched it.) I felt pretty cured. And ready to hit up Map Jam! I wish I had made it out to see Wood and Wire, a bluegrass band I’ve seen at White Horse before and really enjoyed but alas the only band I saw that afternoon was Akina Adderley and the Vintage Playboys. Um, amazing. From all the reviews I’d heard previously I kind of expected her voice to just blow me away. It didn’t, but I don’t want you to think she’s not fantastic. Cause she is. Her stage presence alone is worth going to see her for, not to mention her fantastic band that backs her! So while it wasn’t what I expected, it was still very great. Plus she played at the Historic Victory Grill which I had never had the chance to check out. Bad ass folks who have played there in the past: . Ike & Tina Turner,James BrownEtta JamesBillie HolidayChuck Berry and Janis Joplin.

After a little music hiatus at a friend’s barbecue, we went to Tillery St. Plant Co where we saw El Tule. Now they were awesome! All the songs were in Spanish so I’m not really sure what was going on lyric wise but the beats were fast and sexy. The crowd was definitely feeling it- the whole place was dancing (you know I was!). It definitely made me realize I need to be dancing more. There’s really nothing like dancing to some live music to totally reset my energy levels and mindset. So Austin Map Jam, I hope this is a regular thing. From the look of the crowds, it was a success and I know I had a great time!
