NaNoWriMo, I Will Conquer You Yet

If you haven’t heard of NaNoWriMo, don’t worry about pronouncing it. It makes me feel stupid every time I say it. Or like I’m in a sci-fi movie, “I come in peace from the planet, NaNoWriMo.” Isn’t that where Mork was from? Just kidding.

It’s a challenge. It’s a national challenge to write a novel (or more specifically 50,000 words) in the month of November. The idea is to write as much as you can. Get the words on the page. Don’t edit. Don’t fret. Don’t get caught up in how the story is going. Write words. That’s the only concern.

When I logged in to my account on November 2 (a day late!) NaNoWriMo kindly reminded me that I had first started my account in 2011. How nice to know that I have been trying this for four previous years and have never written a novel, let alone written every day for a month.

This year my intentions are different. I want to form good habits. Every day I am writing for a minimum of 30 minutes. That’s all that’s required of me. So far, I’ve more than achieved my goal. Now I am counting writing for the blog as well as the incredible, page turning stories I’m writing outside of it. (When books go away and everyone reads on electronic devices only, will good stories still be called “page-turners? These are the things that keep me up at night.)

Alright, it’s day 7 and I’ve a story going about murder and deceit and I’ve written two blogs. Let’s hope I can keep it up. I’ve been reading some good advice from Witty Title Here that includes tips from my dear friend Chrissy. The advice and Chrissy’s blog are always worth reading. Wish me luck!
